The Unborn Poster Analysed

The Unborn is a 2009 American supernatural horror-thriller film written and directed by David S. Goyer. The film stars Gary Oldman as a spiritual advisor to a young girl (Odette Yustman) who is tormented by a dybbuk. The dybbuk seeks to use her death as a gateway to physical existence.

This is a unique and very good poster due to many things. It has many genre indicators and is a great poster to take ideas from, as our film is of the horror genre also.

  • The whole poster seems very dark immediately tells the audience that the film it is going to be dark and may have a disturbing storyline.
  • The tag line - 'Evil will do anything to love', is a creepy phrase and sets up the poster perfectly. Its placed clearly so that if someone looks at the poster they will have to read it. The font of the tag line is very blunt and gives off a scary look.
  • Another key aspect of the trailer is the design of the actual title of the film. Unborn is the in big font and ' The' is placed inside the O of the word ' Unborn'. It suggest that it wants to be born but it is stuck inside. It is a very clever title and be read in many different ways.
  • When you look at the poster you can straight away tell that it is being set in a old, run down bathroom. This looks like something you would see in a horror movie with the scary character appearing in the mirror. By using this location it sets up the mood of the poster and is a great genre indicator.
  • Next is the small creepy character in the mirror. As the poster is about being born it is significant that it is a child which is shown as the killer. By showing him it also shows again that it is from the horror genre.
  • Another main point of the poster is the lady standing with her back to us. By placing her only in pants may be to attract the male audience. Also as she has her back turned it may signify that she may have some evil inside her.
  • All around the bathroom is scratches on the walls and mirrors which helps make the bathroom look more scary. As well as doing that it again shows that the film is from the horror genre.
There are many things that we can take from this poster. Firstly it is the colours used in the poster which gives it a scary look to it. If we could use similar dark colours to this it will help to show the audience that our poster is from the horror genre and it will also look professional. Secondly the clever use of the title could be something that we could attempt to do. This is a very clever poster and the standard is something we should aim for.
