The Creep poster analysis : Research and Planning

Creep is a 2004 British horror film about a woman locked in overnight on the London Underground who finds herself being stalked by a hideously deformed killer living in the sewers below. The film, directed by Christopher Smith, was first shown at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival and was also featured at the London FrightFest Film Festival.

  • Starting with the main part of the poster which is of the rotted, rusted train it instantly creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for the audience, the look of the train matches the word used as the title of the film Creep. The train has got graffiti on it and if you look carefully you can see on the right of the train that there is a sentence that says "Beware the beast watches" this gives an indication of what the film may be about which from the poster seems like a train gets taken over by some sort of beast. The hand on the window may be trying to tell the audience that there is no escape from whatever is hunting them and the blood gives away the genre which along with the quotes a famous company at the top of the poster show that the genre is definitely a horror. The quotes may also be used to attract the largest audience as possible because its from a famous company audiences may think that if its rated by a famous company the film must be quite good. The quotes are also in red font which could indicate blood therefore give away the genre which is a horror.

  • The font and colour used for the title is very basic, this makes the title creepy matching with the name of the title, as the title looks a bit weird compared to the rest of the poster.

  • The tag line the poster has used is "Your journey terminates here" this is a typical phrase that is said when an actual train journey ends. This is a good phrase to use as it goes well with the picture of the train in the centre. It also shows that the person inside the train is not at the destination she wants to be and the journey has terminated.

  • All the production companies involved with the film are listed below, this could be a good way to attract audiences as people will go watch the film if its got a big named company beside the film.

I think this poster is very effective because it tells the audience exactly what they need to know about the film and leaves them with a sense of discomfort as most people use use trains and people who get the early morning or late night trains when there is hardly anyone around will be most worried as they may feel it will happen to them. They poster also leaves a strong enigma, things like beware the beast is watching, will make audiences raise questions about what kind of beast it is? Who is the person on the train? Will he/she survive? The poster also makes the audience very clear about the genre and that is the most important point to get across to the audience.
