Empire magazine cover analysis : Research and Planning

  • The main selling point of the poster are the characters in the film Sin City. The cover shows that there are 5 main characters that will star in the film, but Bruce Willis is the most important out of the lot, this is also indicated by how the characters are shaded out apart from Bruce Willis himself.

  • The genre of the film is indicated by the props used and the facial expressions of the characters, 3 out of the 5 characters are holding guns and the long coats they are wearing tell the audience that the genre may be a action or a gangster genre. The facial expressions show that they are serious about what they do and look like they are not scared of anyone.

  • The title of the film is stated in the second biggest font on the cover after the name of the magazine. Its in a white font colour which shows purity and linking this with the 5 characters displayed shows that the characters roles in the film are of a good role.

  • A low angle shot is used to portray the 5 characters this shows the audience that they are the superior characters in the film and will play the lead roles.

  • The background of the magazine cover is a dark and rainy colour, this also shows that the genre could be a gangster genre and in most gangster genre films the gangsters always deal at night.

From this magazine cover what i have learnt is how we can use high and low angles to show superiority and inferiority of the characters and the use of background to indicate genre.
