1408 Poster Analysis

1408 is a 2007 horror film based on the Stephen King short story of the same name directed by Swedish director Mikael Håfström, who earlier had directed the horror film Drowning Ghost. The cast includes John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mary McCormack. The film was released in the U.S. on June 22, 2007

This is a very interesting poster for many reasons.

  • The colour of the whole poster is very iconic. With its weird old styled colour it makes it look very old fashioned and mysterious. It makes the people looking at it feel like it may be a mysterious film and be very confusing.
  • In the centre of the poster is a massive key resembling the key to the door number of 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. This places huge significance on the room and suggests that it is going to be a key part in the film
  • By having the characters either side of the key makes it seem like that these two characters may be in conflict against each other and sets up the tension well. Samuel L. Jackson has the expression on his face that he's had many conflicts with people before. The tag line draws in the audience well and makes you want to know why and what is wrong with the room 1408. This again will make the audience want to go see the film.
  • The names of the actors are in red suggesting anger or violence. This increases the chance of theses two men becoming rivals through the film.
  • Below the main picture it states based on the terrifying novel by Stephen King. As the book was a success and he is well known horror writer people will want to go see the film. As well as that they will also go see the film to see how the film differs from the novel and choose which one they prefer.
  • The release date is quite small but says June 22nd... Everywhere. This is a good way of showing when your film is going to be released.
Overall i feel this is good poster and we can take many things from it. The way the characters are shown to be divided is good and in our group, we could aim to try show the difference between the couple and the killers. Secondly the way the poster looks is good as it seems old and mysterious but in the same time modern. Finally having the title written in the key puts emphasis on the room number and sets up the film to be a great horror.
