Comparing posters - Research and Planning

The Ring

The ring is a horror film that is directed by Gore Verbinski, and starring Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson. It is an American remake of the Japanese film Ringu. The film focuses around a video tape which contains a seemingly disturbing images which are black, white, red, green and blue images. The viewer then receives a phone call and a girl then announces that they will die in seven days.

The ring has a black background meaning darkness and mystery. The ring which is white represents going in to the light which also relates to death.

The poster is very simple but very recognisable. The faint lines over the top can represent breakage in a videotape. This shows representation too the film.

The ring two

The ring two is a sequel to the ring one and again has the same director being Gore Verbinski. The storyline carries on from the first film and has not relation to any previous Japane sequels. It again uses Naomi Watts and Kelly Stables as the evil Samara Morgan.

The ring two again has the ring logo about going into the light which represents death.

Having the girl in the poster also shows an iconic character making people want to go and see the film. The dark background represents death, fear and the unknown.

The title at the bottom reads 'fear comes full circle'. This relates to the title the ring being a full circle.

Relations to both films

The film posters have similar ideas on how to represent the horror aspect and connecting with the audience. They do this by in the first one having a mysterious simple poster but in the second showing the character which makes the audience want to see what happens next.
