Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead mans chest poster analysis : Research and Planning

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a 2006 American adventure film of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the sequel to the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the first film from Walt Disney Pictures to feature the current logo. The film was directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.
  • Starting at the top of the poster, the names of the main actors involved in the film are stated. The 3 names are spread out equally at the top of the page, the same amount of equality symbolises that the characters they will be represented as in the film will be at at the same level of hierarchy in the film. Just under the names of each person there is a picture of who that person is in the film, also showing equality as pictures of all 3 main characters are shown. Giving away the main characters is a very good way to attract audiences as male audiences may go and watch the film due to there being a female lead of Keira Knightley, along with the action in the film. Orlando Bloom would attract female audiences as lots of women find him very attractive and Johnny Depp who will attract audiences who prefer comedy, in the poster Johnny Depp is holding a gun showing hes not going to be his normal comedy actor but a change into may be a violent one. This is also gives away the genre which is an action

  • In the middle section of the poster, there are a couple of ships sailing at sea, telling audiences that the genre may be an adventure. The massive squid tentacle is an enigma, audiences don't quite know what it is and how it will play its part in the film.

  • In the title of the film there is a jolly roger sign with flames on either side, the flames represent destruction but it also leaves an enigma of what will be destructed. The production company Walt Disney Pictures is labelled, this is also a massive way to attract audiences as Walt Disney is a very famous company that has made lots of very good films.

  • In the bottom left hand corner of the film there is a picture of angry looking tribal people holding spears, this may indicate tribal wars and genre which if there is war, then clearly an action.

  • The overall colour of the poster is a mystic green colour, this may try and show mystery and that there may be a twist in the film.
