Strangers Poster analysis : Research and Planning

The Strangers is a 2008 American horror - thriller film written and directed by Bryan Bertino and starring Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Gemma Ward, Laura Margolis, Kip Weeks, and Glenn Howerton. The film revolves around a young couple who are terrorized by three masked assailants who break into the remote summer home in which they are staying and terminate all means of escape.
  • Starting at the top, the tag line "Because you were home" entices the audience into the film, this is a solid statement making the audience afraid of their own home.

  • The poster leaves a massive enigma about who the masked torturers are and why they are doing what they are. The more mystery a poster leaves the more audiences will raise questions about what will happen and therefore will want to go watch the film to find out what actually happens.

  • The couple are tied up and being stared down by people with masks, this is a clear genre indicator of the film which in this case is horror/thriller. The tying up of the two characters also leaves an enigma for the audience, questions like will they survive? How will they escape? Will attract audiences so they can find out what actually happens.

  • The title of the film is made from an abnormal font making it look very strange, which matches it with the actual title of the film "The Strangers."

  • The cast is a good way to attract audiences that like films with these specific actors. The two names are level with each other, showing there isn’t a dominant character and both people are in the same level of hierarchy.

  • The production company is also a good way to attract audiences, some company.production companies are more dominant than others because they create better films therefore people will know that this film must be quite good if it’s done by a good production.

In my opinion this is a very good poster as it leaves lots of enigmas for the audience to solve and therefore entices the audience to come find out what actually happens.
