Editing: Titles/Captions : Research and Planning

Having analysed horror genre teaser trailers, one thing that I found they had in common were titles/captions during the trailer. As we are creating a trailer our group decided to have titles/captions in the trailer like all other trailers. We thought this is was a clear genre indicator and tells the audience a basic storyline of what will happen in the film.

Most trailers have similar titles/captions but slight differences that make them unique, the main similarity was the format they were shown in, for example for the trailer of Halloween, the titles/captions started from the beginning of the trailer then stopped just before the montage began, after the montage which is usually quite close to the end of the trailer one final title/caption was shown that leaves an enigma for the audience to solve. The main difference is basically the villain, all horror films have a unique villain/killer and as most titles/captions tell the audience a basic storyline, a main part of this storyline includes a story of the villain/killer and also leaves an enigma of who the killer is.

The basic storyline for our film is, a couple move to a new house because of a new job that the male partner has got. The female partner doesn’t won’t to move house and is angry about this, as they move in the couple have an argument and as they start to think things cant get worse, it does and they are tortured by a psychopathic killer. The titles/captions we are going to be using for our trailer are: A new home, A new job, A new Start? This will run from the beginning of the trailer till the montage, after the montage the final title/caption will be, How well do you know your Neighbour? Leaving an uncormfortable and paranoir ending for the audience.
