Analysing Inception teaser trailer

Inception is an upcoming science fiction film written, produced and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is scheduled to be released on July 16, 2010.

The very first shot is of the Warner brothers logo darkened which straight away tells the audience that its not going to be a comedy or a happy trailer. The shot then zooms in through the logo, which as you get closer looks like a birds eye view of a city. By this it means that the trailer or the actual film could be set in a city. Christopher Nolan has had huge hits, most recently The Dark Knight and the next shot is just a title saying: ' From Christopher Nolan. With the non diegetic sound of a horn of some sort makes the audience feel nervy. Noises like this can be used in ours which would help us make the people watching feel uncomfortable. A simple extreme close up shot of a piece of metal spinning around. Its unclear what its spinning on but the shot makes the audience think what is going on. The same non-diegetic sound can be heard getting louder and quicker. It then has another title stating: ' The director of the Dark Knight'. This makes the audience recognize that by this director directing other previous success's that this film could be a good one as well.

It then fades to a birds eye view of a busy city, which could also be classed as an establishing shot. We wont be using a birds eye view shot due to lack of equipment, but we may use a shot showing where the main location of the film will be. It cuts straight to a close up of a distressed looking Leonardo DiCaprio staring through a rain showered window. With the rain on the window and the expression on his face you may guess that he's staring at something which isn't nice or good. It cuts to a point of view with two man dragging another man away. It looks like they are on a helipad, meaning Leonardo is in a helicopter. Leonardo DiCaprio's name flashes up with a nifty noise making his name significant. It cuts to a glass of water which is on a still table. The water inside seems to move but the table stays still. This makes the audience wonder why its happening and is a very clever shot. More titles follow with twisting and turning backgrounds making it all seem clockwork with the same music playing over and over. Fight scenes are shown which look similar to the kind of fighting you see in the matrix. Also a man rising from some water is shown. These quick montage of shots speed up leading to the end shot of it rising up from a city into the name of the film. This clever transition is very well created but we'd be unable to create this as we don't have anywhere near the standard of programme to make it.

Overall from this trailer I feel I have learned that the music is incredibly important. Throughout the trailer it creates real tension and makes it flow superbly. Also if we used a montage of shots near the end it would help entice our audience to the maximum
